Baby Green Herons

If you have seen Cruising in the Wild's website, Mississippiwild.com, you probably read about the baby Green Herons spotted last year in the Davis Bayou section of Gulf Islands National Seashore Park.

Just before sunset yesterday, both parents were seen first, leading us to look in the familiar nesting tree for babies. Four of them hopped around above Miss Gator's pond waiting for their parents' return. So large to be called "babies", yet, as the fuzz amongst the feathers suggested, that's exactly what they are.

That the parents continue to choose a tree with a branch above a pond frequented by an alligator, tells us something about the nature of the creatures in marsh land. While they must always be cautious, life goes on, and it is too short to fear what may happen. Doing so would cause them to miss the good it has to offer. That is a lesson we can all learn from the Green Herons of south Mississippi.
